Recommended research on how to create an IT office in Saigon

Hi Tomo,

I came across your page doing some research on doing business in Vietnam. I'm currently trying to compile some numbers on how much it would cost to set-up an office in Saigon for about 12 software developers. I work for a small software company based in the US and we're interested in setting up some of our software development work in Vietnam. Any suggestions on where I can research the costs and pricing of all the things required to open up shop in Vietnam in English (office space, data line service providers, business fees, etc)?

Hi Vic,

The costs can vary, of course. Depends on if you want Class A office space or something more cheaper or "informal" like a large house used as an office. Twelve people can fit in a house, but it will be harder or impossible to expand without moving. But the house can be rented for a few hundred dollars a month whereas it might be around $100 per square meter for premier office space.

Cost per developer also varies wildly. An intern or new university graduate might be $150 to $200 depending on technical and foreign language skills whereas an experienced tech lead would command many times that amount.

My advice is to come here and spend at least a few weeks here because you won't be able to get all the information you need online unless you don't care about the costs.

Hi Vic,
Vietnam's Law allows foreigner to have the company. About the cost to open up the Ltd. Company is low and it's quite easy.
ISP: choose VDC (Vietnam Datacommunication Company), the biggest ISP in Vietnam.
Business fee to open up the company is not expensive, about 100-200usd
Place: according to your need, with 12 sofgware developers, you can rent the building office or some house for rent ...
Salary cost: as I know, average salary for software developers in Vietnam is from 350usd/month.

Thank you Quan, this is a good start. Do you know where I could get information on business taxes and fees as well as legal and accounting services on the web in English? Also, what about Visa status for managers that need to visit the office in Vietnam regularly?

Well, I don't know where to get these information IN ENGLISH. And this is not my major, so I can't give you an advice. But I thinks you can contact a legal add office and they will consult you (in English, for sure), If you want, I can find the one and give you the contact. You can ask them how to open a company (many kinds of company), how to calculate the tax, fees, and accounting services. And I think you can ask them about your visa.

As my opinion, at first you should find out vietnam culture, people and law in general, moreover, find out the IT market, your major. After that, you can be consult by some law consulting service to open the company, it is not complicated. Finally, you can hire a vietnamese employee to be in charge of accouting, taxes and fees

About the visa, I don't know much but i think it rather easy because there are many foreigner boss arrive to vietnam to take care of their company for several days.

Where is Saigon?

It's not wrong to wonder where in the world Saigon is.

Saigon is the name of the city now officially known as Ho Chi Minh City. But most people who call Saigon home call their home Saigon and it's mostly tourists who I hear refer to it as Ho Chi Minh City (or Ho Chi Minh Ville for the French).

After the Vietnam/American War ended in 1975, many place names ceased to exist such as Saigon, South Vietnam, and plenty of street names.

Tu Do is now Dong Khoi, Thong Nhat is Le Duan. And Tan Son Nhut Airport is now Tan Son Nhat International Airport. Rue Paul Blanchy has been Hai Ba Trung since the 1950s.

Those who haven't seen Vietnam for decades will be confused not just by the geographical changes but the incredible amount of development and modernization that has since taken place.
